A clear account first gives the context: when, where and in what circumstances? “L’année dernière” places the experience in the past.
In this example, the passé composé presents actions (“j’ai commencé”, “j’ai demandé”), while the imparfait describes an ongoing difficulty (“je comprenais difficilement”).
Connect your ideas: “donc” introduces a consequence; “grâce à” introduces a positive cause here. Finish by explaining what changed for you.
